The International Commission (Hashd) criticizes the West Bank’s persistent persecution of freedom of expression and ideas and the policy of arbitrary arrests based on political backgrounds.
The International Commission to Support Palestinian Rights (Hashd) condemns the Palestinian Authority’s security apparatus’s suppression of the peaceful march that took place in the Jenin camp yesterday evening, Saturday, August 5, 2023, and fired bullets and tear gas at it, arresting some of its participants. According to reports, the authority’s security forces assaulted the march as soon as it reached the German memorial, pelting it with tear gas and firing live bullets into the air, injuring journalist Ali Samoudi with shrapnel in the head, and the journalist Muhammad Abed was wounded with a gas bomb in his knee, while masked members of the authority apparatus Some of the participants were handcuffed in their military uniforms and taken to the district headquarters in the city.
The International Commission (Hashd) strongly condemns the security services’ repression and illegal behavior against citizens, and emphasizes the necessity and importance of respecting the right to peaceful assembly and public freedoms guaranteed in the Palestinian Basic Law and international covenants, it registers and demands the following:
- The International Commission (Hashd) requests that the Public Prosecution initiate an inquiry into the attacks on people and media and bring those guilty to justice to prevent future abuses. Civil peace, preservation of rights and freedoms, and public security are all priorities.
- The International Commission (Hashd) warns of the consequences of continuing the policy of preventing peaceful assemblies and arbitrary arrests, and calls on the government and all forces, factions, and civil society organizations to work for the protection of human rights and freedoms, as well as the release of political detainees.
