Press Release
An appeal to international bodies from 140 human rights organizations
The undersigned human rights organizations express their strong condemnation of the murder of the Palestinian martyr prisoner Nasser Abu Hamid behind the iron bars of Zionist racism, which exposes the fate that Israel is preparing for Palestinian prisoners in general and for the sick among them, in particular.
It is well known that Israel has broken all criminal records against the Palestinian people during a period of 74 years, that is, from the Great Nakba in 1948 to the present day. A crime that goes beyond the limits of imagination. That in addition to being the only state in the world that keeps the bodies of many Palestinians whom it kills under torture while humiliating their families, it continues to torture sick prisoners until they die. The despicable and shameful silence of the world encourages Israel to continue its terrible barbaric and racist practice.
The epic of the captive martyr, Nasser Abu Hamid, is one of the clearest examples of Israel’s culture of racial brutality. He comes from a Palestinian family known for his patriotism and sacrifices. He and four of his brothers were sentenced to life imprisonment, while his fifth brother, Abd al-Rahim, was killed by Israeli bullets. Nasser Abu Hamid contracted cancer while in captivity and under torture and physical abuse by the prison administration, a practice known to all who pay attention to the suffering of the Palestinian people.
It was the Israeli occupation and apartheid authorities who caused his serious state of health and murdered him, depriving him of all medical treatment. He went into a coma and his family couldn’t see him. Today, these same authorities keep his body and refuse to hand it over to his family. With the medical negligence (slow murder) of the prisoner Nasser Abu Hamid committed by the occupation authorities, the number of martyrs from the captive movement rose to 233 martyrs since 1967, including 74 martyrs as a result of the crime of medical negligence (slow murder).
Today, all prisoners face the same fate, especially those with incurable diseases.
The undersigned human rights organizations appeal to all international bodies dealing with human rights and international humanitarian law and those concerned with the protection of prisoners and the civilian population under occupation, in particular the International Committee of the Red Cross, so that they express more clearly, with courage and honesty their condemnation of these crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli occupation authorities and the apartheid against the prisoners. These crimes constitute a flagrant violation of all the rules and norms of international human rights law and international humanitarian law, in particular the Third Geneva Convention of 1949 concerning the protection of prisoners of war and the United Nations Convention United Against Torture Act of 1984, and calls for them to prosecute Israeli officials for war crimes, crimes against humanity, torture, terrorism, and apartheid before the competent international courts. These organizations cannot evade their responsibility, which justifies their very existence and call on all the world’s free peoples to work to stop this massacre that has lasted for 74 years.
The undersigned organizations are calling for an international fact-finding committee to open an urgent investigation into the circumstances of the death, and to announce its results, so that those responsible for these crimes committed against the prisoners will be held accountable. The fact that the Israeli officials remain unpunished for the crimes they commit constitutes a disgrace to all those who evade relief for the Palestinian prisoners in the prisons of the Israeli occupation and apartheid state.
Human rights organizations also call on all international bodies concerned with human rights to work for the immediate release of the bodies of Palestinian martyrs, which are being held by the Israeli occupation and apartheid authorities.
