Press release,
ICSPR demands the Palestinian security services in the West Bank to stop practicing political and arbitrary detention.
The International Commission to Support Palestinians’ Rights “ICSPR” follows with great disapproval and concern the implementation of the Palestinian security services in the West Bank -during the past two days- of a political, arbitrary and illegal arrest campaign against political opponents, especially against activists who participated in national activities against the crimes of the Israeli occupation in the Palestinian territories (Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip), in addition to activists in political parties, or some candidates in registered electoral lists for the legislative elections, which was canceled according to a presidential decree.
ICSPR condemns in the strongest possible terms the continued practice of political and arbitrary detention, and considers that this practice and the accompanying torture constitute a clear violation of the obligations of the National Authority under the national law and international conventions on human rights to which it has acceded, and fears that to be a clear scheme seeking to return to the political and arbitrary detention box as a means of revenge and political terrorism. Therefore:
- ICSPR calls on the Palestinian Attorney General to work hard to release all political detainees in the West Bank.
- ICSPR calls on the Palestinian security services to stop practicing political retaliation, and to strictly adhere to the provisions of the national law that granted the jurisdiction to arrest to judicial officers under the supervision of the Public Prosecution
- ICSPR calls on the local community, especially the parties and unions, to exert more efforts to pressure the Palestinian Authority to stop the campaigns of arbitrary and political arrests.
