Press Release
The International Commission demands the security services in the West Bank to stop practicing political arrests
The International Commission to Support Palestinians’ Rights (ICSPR) strongly condemns the arrest of six students from Hebron University by the Palestinian General Intelligence Service in Hebron several days ago “according to information published by the Independent Commission for Human Rights”, after they participated in a sit-in within Hebron University to protest against the political detention.
The International Commission affirms that political and arbitrary arrests and detentions violate human rights and Palestinian law, it also expresses its concern over the continuation of arbitrary arrests by the security services in the West Bank and fears that detainees may be subjected to torture and ill-treatment. Therefore:
- ICSPR expresses its absolute rejection of arbitrary arrest on the background of opinion or political affiliation, and condemns any attempts to justify these arrests.
- ICSPR calls upon the Palestinian government to act immediately to ensure the release of all political and arbitrary detainees in the West Bank, including the six students, and to desist from this practice, which constitutes a flagrant violation of Palestinian law and international human rights standards.
